How to Back Up Your Phone on Android and iPhone

Phones get lost, stolen, dropped in water and reset by mistake every day. A good backup turns that disaster into a small inconvenience. This guide shows how to back up your phone on Android and iPhone, step by step, so your photos, contacts and chats stay safe.

What should you back up?

Most people care about the same things. Before you start, make a quick list:

  • Photos and videos
  • Contacts
  • WhatsApp chats and media
  • Text messages and call history
  • App data and settings
  • Important documents and downloads

Some of these back up automatically once you switch the right settings on. Others, such as WhatsApp, need their own backup.

How to back up your phone on Android

Android phones back up to your Google account. Google gives every account 15 GB of free storage, shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

1. Turn on Google backup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Google › Backup. On some phones, it sits under System › Backup.
  3. Turn on Backup by Google One.
  4. Tap Back up now.

This saves app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS messages. It runs automatically when the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

2. Back up photos and videos

Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture and choose Turn on backup. Pick a quality setting. “Storage saver” uses less space, while “Original quality” keeps every detail.

3. Samsung phones

Samsung users can also use Settings › Accounts and backup. From there, you can back up to Samsung Cloud or use Smart Switch to save everything to a computer.

How to back up your phone on iPhone

iPhones back up to iCloud or to a computer.

1. Back up with iCloud

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap iCloud › iCloud Backup.
  3. Turn on Back Up This iPhone.
  4. Tap Back Up Now and stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.

Apple gives 5 GB of free iCloud storage. That fills up quickly, so many users buy a small iCloud+ plan.

2. Back up to a computer

Connect your iPhone with a cable. On a Mac, open Finder and select the phone. On Windows, use the Apple Devices app. Then click Back Up Now. A computer backup costs nothing and has no storage limit beyond your hard drive.

Apple explains every option in its official iPhone backup guide.

Back up WhatsApp on Android and iPhone

WhatsApp chats are not always part of your main phone backup, so set this up separately.

  1. Open WhatsApp › Settings › Chats › Chat backup.
  2. Choose Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone).
  3. Set a schedule, such as daily or weekly.
  4. Tap Back up.

Use the 3-2-1 backup rule

Experts recommend keeping three copies of important files, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. For a phone, that might look like this:

  • The original on your phone.
  • A copy in the cloud, such as Google Photos or iCloud.
  • Another copy on a laptop or external drive.

This protects you if one service fails, an account gets hacked or you forget a password.

How to check your backup worked

A backup you never check might not exist. On Android, return to Settings › Google › Backup and look at the “Last backup” time. On iPhone, the iCloud Backup screen shows the same detail. Also open Google Photos or iCloud Photos on a computer to confirm your pictures are there.

Keep your backups secure

Your backups hold your whole digital life, so protect the accounts behind them. Use a strong password and turn on two-step verification for your Google account and Apple ID. Our phone security tips explain how. If your phone ever goes missing, a recent backup makes recovery much easier. See our guide on eSIM too if you plan to switch devices.

How to restore your backup on a new phone

A backup is only useful if you can restore it. Here’s how to bring everything back when you set up a new or reset phone.

On Android, sign in with the same Google account during setup. When the phone asks, choose to restore from your latest backup. Your apps, contacts, call history and settings will return. Then open Google Photos, sign in, and your pictures appear automatically.

On iPhone, choose Restore from iCloud Backup on the Apps & Data screen during setup. Sign in to your Apple ID and pick the most recent backup. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and plugged in until the restore finishes.

For WhatsApp, install the app and verify the same phone number. It will offer to restore your chats from Google Drive or iCloud. Tap Restore before you start chatting.
