Act fast and stop saving new files
When you delete a photo, most phones move it to a trash folder first. Items stay there for a limited time, usually 30 to 60 days. After that, they’re removed permanently.
If a photo has already left the trash, every new file you save could overwrite it. So stop taking new photos and downloading files until you’ve tried the steps below.
How to recover deleted photos on Android with Google Photos
Most Android phones use Google Photos. Here’s how to restore items from its trash:
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections (or Library), then Bin or Trash.
- Touch and hold the photo you want back.
- Tap Restore.
Google keeps backed-up items in the trash for 60 days. Items that were never backed up may only stay for 30 days. Google’s official Google Photos help page explains the details.
Samsung Gallery recycle bin
Samsung phones have their own gallery app with a separate recycle bin.
- Open Gallery.
- Tap the menu (three lines) and choose Recycle bin.
- Select the photos and tap Restore.
Deleted items normally stay here for 30 days. Other brands, such as Xiaomi, Tecno and Infinix, offer a similar “Recently deleted” album inside their gallery apps.
How to recover deleted photos on iPhone
iPhones keep deleted pictures in a special album.
- Open the Photos app.
- Scroll down to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted.
- Unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Select the photos and tap Recover.
Photos stay in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. If you use iCloud Photos, recovering them on one device restores them on all your Apple devices.
Check your cloud backups
If the trash is empty, your photos may still exist in a backup. Check these places:
- Google Photos on the web at photos.google.com
- iCloud Photos at icloud.com
- Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox, if you turned on camera upload
- A computer where you once copied your pictures
Don’t have backups yet? Read our guide on how to back up your phone so this never happens again.
Recover deleted photos from WhatsApp
If someone sent you the picture on WhatsApp, scroll back through the chat. It may still be there. You can also ask the sender to forward it again.
On Android, check the WhatsApp folder in your Files app under Android › media › com.whatsapp › WhatsApp › Media. Restoring a recent WhatsApp chat backup can also bring back old media.
What if the photos are gone for good?
If a photo isn’t in the trash or any backup, recovery becomes difficult. Here are your remaining options:
- Memory cards: if the photo was on an SD card, remove the card and scan it on a computer with a trusted recovery tool such as the free, open-source PhotoRec.
- Professional data recovery: specialist labs can sometimes help, but they’re expensive and success isn’t guaranteed.
Be careful with phone recovery apps that promise miracles. Many are fake, full of ads or ask for risky permissions. Our phone security guide explains how to spot dangerous apps.
Prevent losing deleted photos in future
A few simple habits protect your memories:
- Turn on automatic backup in Google Photos or iCloud.
- Copy important photos to a computer or external drive every few months.
- Check the trash before emptying it.
- Keep enough free space so your phone doesn’t delete things to make room. See how to free up storage on Android.
Check hidden and archived albums first
Sometimes photos aren’t deleted at all. They’re simply hidden. Before you start a recovery, check these places:
- Google Photos Archive: archived photos disappear from the main view but stay in Collections › Archive.
- Google Photos Locked Folder: a protected folder that needs your screen lock.
- iPhone Hidden album: in the Photos app under Utilities › Hidden.
- Samsung Secure Folder: a separate, locked space with its own gallery.
- Other gallery apps: some brands show photos from different folders in separate albums.
Also use the search bar in your gallery app. Searching for a place, a person or a word like “receipt” can quickly surface pictures you thought were gone.
Frequently asked questions
How long do deleted photos stay on my phone?
Usually 30 days on iPhone and Samsung, and up to 60 days in Google Photos for backed-up items.
Can I recover photos after a factory reset?
Only from a backup. A factory reset erases the phone’s storage.
Do recovery apps really work?
Some can recover files from memory cards. On modern phones with encrypted storage, they rarely succeed.
