How to Take a Screenshot on Android: 6 Easy Ways

Want to save a chat, a receipt or a funny post? Learning how to take a screenshot on Android takes less than a minute. This guide covers the button method that works on almost every phone, plus faster shortcuts on Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Xiaomi and Pixel devices.

How to Take a Screenshot on Android: 6 Easy Ways

The quick answer

On nearly every Android phone, press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Hold them for about one second, then let go. The screen flashes and a small preview appears in the corner. That’s it.

If that does not work, don’t worry. Android offers several other methods, and at least one of them will suit your phone and your hands.

How to take a screenshot on Android: 6 easy methods

Try these methods in order. Most phones support three or four of them.

1. Use the Power and Volume Down buttons

This is the standard Android shortcut. Press both buttons together, not one after the other. If you press Power first, the screen may switch off. If you press Volume Down first, the volume bar appears instead.

On some older Samsung phones with a physical Home button, press Power and Home together instead.

2. Swipe down with three fingers

Many phones from Tecno, Infinix, itel, Xiaomi, Redmi, Oppo and Vivo support a three-finger swipe. Place three fingers on the screen and swipe down quickly. If nothing happens, open Settings and search for “three-finger screenshot” or “gestures” to switch it on.

3. Use the Quick Settings tile

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings. Look for a tile called Screenshot or Screen capture. Tap it, and the phone captures the screen behind the panel. If you can’t see the tile, tap the pencil icon to edit and add it.

4. Palm swipe on Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung offers a handy gesture. Go to Settings › Advanced features › Motions and gestures and turn on Palm swipe to capture. Then swipe the edge of your hand across the screen from one side to the other.

5. Ask Google Assistant or Gemini

Say “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” The assistant captures whatever is on the screen. This is useful when your hands are busy or a button is broken.

6. Back tap on Google Pixel

Pixel phones support a back tap gesture called Quick Tap. Open Settings › System › Gestures › Quick Tap, turn it on and choose “Take screenshot.” Then double-tap the back of the phone.

How to take a scrolling screenshot

Sometimes a single screen is not enough. For example, you may want a full chat or a long web page in one image. After taking a normal screenshot, look at the preview toolbar. Tap Capture more, Scroll capture or the double-arrow icon. Then drag the frame down or tap repeatedly until you have everything.

This feature works in most apps, including browsers and WhatsApp. However, some apps with special layouts may not support it.

Where to find your screenshots

Your phone saves screenshots in a folder called Screenshots. You can find it in:

  • Google Photos: Library › Screenshots
  • Samsung Gallery: Albums › Screenshots
  • Files app: Internal storage › Pictures › Screenshots or DCIM › Screenshots

Screenshots can take up a lot of space over time. If your phone is full, follow our guide on how to free up storage on Android.

Edit and share a screenshot on Android

Tap the preview right after you capture the screen. You can crop it, draw on it, highlight text or blur private details. Then tap Share to send it by WhatsApp, email or any other app.

Before sharing, always check for personal information. Bank details, phone numbers and one-time codes should never appear in screenshots you post online. Our phone security tips explain why this matters.

Why a screenshot on Android might fail

If nothing works, here are the most common causes:

  • The app blocks screenshots. Banking apps, Netflix and some private chats block them for security. You’ll see a message such as “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy.”
  • Work profile restrictions. Company-managed phones may disable the feature.
  • Storage is full. The phone needs a little free space to save the image.
  • Wrong button timing. Press both buttons at exactly the same moment.
  • Incognito mode. Chrome blocks screenshots in incognito tabs by default.

If the buttons themselves seem broken, use the Quick Settings tile or ask the assistant instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shortcut for a screenshot on Android?

Press Power and Volume Down together. This works on almost every Android phone made in recent years.

Can I take a screenshot without buttons?

Yes. Use the Quick Settings tile, a three-finger swipe, palm swipe on Samsung or a voice command.

Does the other person know when I screenshot a chat?

WhatsApp and most messaging apps do not notify the other person. However, some apps, such as Snapchat, do send an alert.

Why are my screenshots blurry?

Screenshots match your screen resolution. If they look blurry after sharing, the app you used to send them probably compressed the image.
